The Journey Of Casinos And Gambling

What do you mean by a casino? You can say that it is an Indoor amusement park for grown-ups where they can entertain themselves; it has lighted waterworks, amazing hotels, fancy themes, musical concerts, and shopping facilities. While these things pull the guests’ eyes, casinos would face extinction if there weren’t the game of chance or gambling, which is the spine of its existence.

Games of like blackjack, slot machines, roulette, kino, crabs, and Baccarat, are played in it, whether land-based or online versions that are very popular nowadays. In this article, we will reverse the footprints of the journey made by casinos to understand their origin and history.

The History

Gambling is undoubtedly more ancient than recorded human history, with primitive produce known as Astragali, cut-knuckle bones, and even carved six-sided dice found in the most ancient excavation sites. The casino as a vicinity for folks to find various ways to gamble in the same place did not develop until the 16th century. A trend of gambling swept Europe then, with Italian elites often holding private parties in vicinities known as Ridotti. Which were private clubs for affluent folks, but the fame of gambling meant that it was the primary pastime. It was unlawful technically, but a ridotto was rarely disturbed by legal authorities. It was known when to expect the Italian Inquisition from the elites. The lower classes were also gambling but there was the absence of the fancy places the rich held.

In the year 1638, the Venice government undertook the decision the construction of a gambling house to control it and earn some money from it as well. A four-story facility called the Ridotto was constructed by them eventually. It had multiple gambling rooms with different types of foods and beverages to keep the gamblers satisfied and content. It holds importance for two reasons:

  1.  It was the first gambling house that the government ran in the entire world.
  2. It was the first gambling house that allowed common folks to gamble.

The clients were rich in general if you go by the high-stakes games, but in principle, Venice is the birthplace of the modern-day casino because of the Ridotto. With France inventing the most famous games we see in a modern-day casino and the initial thought being developed by the Italians, we can say that the modern-day casino has multiple roots, contributing to its versatility.

Gambling in the States

Gambling in the States went through many highs and lows with the strong wave in the 1800s. In the year 1931, Nevada made it legal. Soon, the gamblers were drawn to Reno, followed by Las Vegas, where the strip was born by the downtown gamblers. Atlantic City, and new jersey, brought legal gambling to the east coast in the 1970s.
